GATHERING SIGNATURES FOR BALLOT ACCESS -- START JANUARY 1!

--------------------------------BEFORE--------------------------------

Make sure you copy BOTH SIDES of the forms. (We don't need to write anything on the back, but election officials do.)

Signatures of voters from different counties must be placed on different sheets. Keep several sheets, one for each county from which you encounter voters.

--------------------------------DURING--------------------------------

Always ask immediately if the person is registered to vote in Indiana. If not registered, ask them if they want to register. Always have voter registration forms handy. Move on quickly if the person is not interested.

Remind people to write clearly and legibly -- if the election officials can't read it, they won't count it.

People must use the residence address where they are registered to vote, NOT a post office box.

Frequent highly-populated areas: farmers' markets, busy downtown streets, sporting events, post offices, etc.

Always be polite and respectful. In addition to achieving ballot access, the signature-gathering campaign builds name recognition for the Green Party and its candidates. Make a good first impression!

Develop a standard speech, such as, "Hello! Are you registered to vote? ... I'm trying to get a candidate on the ballot for the Green Party. Could I have your signature?" If you're nervous, having this speech ready can help.

Relax! You don't have to be perfect, and you don't have to get a signature from every person you approach. Don't get discouraged by refusals or even the occasional rude comment. If you keep at it, you'll get plenty of signatures, and that's what counts.

--------------------------------AFTER---------------------------------

Go over your sheets to expand ditto marks and fill in zip codes.

MAKE COPIES of each sheet before turning it in.

For your own county, turn the originals in to your county voter registration office and mail the copies to:

Indiana Green Party
PO Box 3393
Bloomington, IN 47402

For other counties, mail both the originals and the copies to IGP.

The deadline is NOON, JUNE 28. Sheets for other counties should be sent to IGP at least two weeks in advance, so we can mail them to the appropriate counties before the deadline.
